Trendy travel must-haves for today’s business traveler

Forbes.com has recently posted a video where host Evelyn Russi asks the CEOs of Hermes and Timex plus designer Elie Tahari to share their favorite travel products and what they can’t leave home without. Product tips included the following must have travel items:

  • Robert Chavez (the CEO of Hermes USA): Chavez noted that today’s business travelers are increasingly needing to take shorter but more productive business trips. Hence, he showed off some of his favorite travel bags or overnight bags that are perfect for business travelers who are both in a hurry and often on the go (Although it should be noted that these bags retail from US$3,500 to US$20,000+)
  • Designer Elie Tahari: Tahari on the other hand noted that when he travels, his favorite items of clothing are simple tee-shirts and jeans which are, like the business wear he designs, are both comfortable and stylish. In fact, his own personal style includes both items paired with a blazer. For women, he also suggested having plenty of pairs of leggings and tunics.
  • Hans Kristian-Hoejsgaard (The CEO of Timex): Kristian-Hoejsgaard, as the CEO of a watch company with 15 brand lines, naturally must travel with a whole collection of watches. Hence, he listed his favorite watches to travel with – especially ones that know what time zone the wearer is in and will automatically adjust according.

The short video is well worth watching, especially if you are a frequent business traveler.

KLCC Parkview Kuala Lumpur review

Located just a 5 minute walk from KLCC and just between KLCC LRT & Monorail Station, the KLCC Parkview offers easy accessibility to the City Centre, the Petronas Twin Towers, the Suria KLCC shopping mall, The Pavillion, Bukit Bintang and the KL Golden Triangle areas. On offer are fully furnished studios (like the one in the video below) that are approximately 40 sqms in area – more space than most hotel rooms. In addition, the building has a 34th floor swimming pool facing the KLCC Twin Tower along with a Jacuzzi, gym, sauna and laundry service. In other words, everything you need for either a short-term or a long-term stay.

Hence, a recent article and a slideshow from Forbes Traveler that lists the top 15 travel scams to avoid is well worth reading. The top 15 scams noted by Forbes (which also details each and every one of them in their slideshow) included the following:

    1. Phantom Admission Tickets
    2. Airline Checked Baggage Fees
    3. Unscrupulous Parking Valets
    4. Unsecure Airport Security Areas
    5. Free Vacations with Hidden Costs
    6. Hotels' Unlikely Locations
    7. Hotel Room ID Theft
    8. Knockoffs That Could Knock You Off
    9. Crafty Money Changers
    10. Taxis That Take You for a Ride
    11. Frequent-Flier Fees
    12. Two-for-One Offers
    13. Rental Car Insurance Extras

How to set up a new business in Hong Kong

If you are coming to Hong Kong to set up a new business or perhaps set up a representative office for an existing company, this short video by ServCorp Smart Offices, a global serviced office provider with a presence in Hong Kong, is well worth watching. In the video, John Barclay of Primasia Corporate Services discusses just how easy it is to set up and maintain an office or a business based in Hong Kong with the initial startup requirements being:

  1. One director and one shareholder.
  2. Issuance of one share of stock worth one Hong Kong dollar.
  3. A Hong Kong company secretary and a Hong Kong address.

A company in Hong Kong can be taken from the shelf and fully activated within one week and all that is required to administer it is a simple annual registry return and a tax return supported by audited returns – reasons why Hong Kong is consistently rated one of the most business friendly environments in the world.

Should you rent a serviced office in Singapore?

If you are coming to Singapore to set up a new office or complete a short-term project or you are already in Singapore and your business is in a period of transition, renting a serviced office may be an option that you should consider.

Who should rent a serviced office in Singapore?

In general, you should consider a serviced office if you:

  • Are a start-up, a consultancy, a representative offices or a project team.
  • Need a temporary space as you plan to change locations soon.
  • Want to have prestigious office address in a central location.
  • Are unsure as to whether you will need to expand or contract the size of your operation.
  • Have a short-term term project and need additional office space.

What are the advantages of a serviced office in Singapore?

There are several key advantages to renting a serviced office when in Singapore, namely:

  • There will be little in the way of start-up costs for fit-outs or brokerage fees to pay.
  • There will be little in the way of hidden costs that are associated with setting up or running an office.
  • Lease terms are more flexible and can be short-term.
  • You will likely have an address in a Grade A building in Singapore’s CBD.
  • You will have onsite support services such as conference room facilities and admin help when you need it.

What are the disadvantages of a serviced office in Singapore?

However, there can also be some disadvantages to renting a serviced office when in Singapore, namely:

  • Rental costs may be more expensive over the long-term.
  • You will not be-able to extend your personal brand to your office space.
  • There is less visibility for your business as it is unlikely to appear on the building’s directory.
  • Shared facilities may not be available when you need them.
  • Some of your customers or clients may perceive your business to be unstable or small.

Rental costs and terms:

Most serviced offices in Singapore will ask you to pay a refundable rental deposit, usually 1-3 months, prior to occupation. Otherwise, the cost of renting a serviced office with vary according to:

  1. Location of the serviced office
  2. Size of the space
  3. Duration of the lease
  4. Types of additional services you use

Monthly rental costs will cover basic services/facilities while other additional services that are not covered in your rental fee will be charged on a pay-per-use basis.

Some final advice:

If you are setting up a new office in Singapore or you are in a period of transition and want a convenient and flexible option for office space, than a serviced office may be the right option for you. However, it is still important to weigh the pros and cons of renting a serviced office, especially for the long term, and to fully understand the terms of the lease that you will end up signing.

In addition and if you have a laptop, there is free wireless internet in the lobby area.

Interviews with the CEO of The Executive Centre serviced offices

In these interviews from three years ago, Paul Salnikow, the CEO and founder of The Executive Centre, one of the leading providers of serviced offices, virtual offices and conference meeting room facilities within Asia and especially China, discussed the company’s expansion plans and the general market characteristics of serviced office space - such as how moving into a serviced office during a slowdown acts as a hedge to avoid capital expenditures.

At the time of the interviews, their plans included adding 20 new centers in China and moving beyond the major cities of Shanghai and Beijing into China’s secondary cities. In fact, Paul mentioned that they were already doubling their China network every 3 quarters while the group was already the largest serviced office operator in Hong Kong:

All Nippon Airways (ANA) now providing women-only lavatories

Japan is a country known for having women only trains, but now All Nippon Airways (ANA) has introduced women-only lavatories. According to the Airline Reporter blog among other blogs, women-only lavatories are now available on ANA’s international planes, except the Boeing 737 or Airbus A320, and they have a pink logo on their doors.

However, there will be some circumstances when male passengers may use the female lavatories, namely:

    • When required for safety reasons, just prior to the seat belt sign being turned on during take-off and landing.
    • When a passenger is not feeling well and a personal emergency requires such use.
    • When there are very few female passengers and the women-only designation has been lifted for the flight. If this is the case, an in-flight announcement will be made.

Nevertheless, this may prove to be a good idea because after all, a man using the restroom during turbulence could cause some “issues” plus women wouldn’t have to worry about having to put down the toilet seat in their own lavatories!

Asia’s strangest airports

Popular Mechanics magazine has recently featured eighteen of the world’s strangest airports – including five located in Asia. As the magazine noted, there are many challenges to building an airport as there are often few places to build that are ideal. Moreover, they must ensure what they build is as safe as possible in a variety of situations. Hence, Popular Mechanics survey of airports includes those that range from being dangerous to just plain unique.

For Asia though, the magazine cited the following airports:

Kansai International Airport (Osaka, Japan). With land being scarce in Japan, Kansai was constructed on an artificial island that is 2.5 miles long and 1.6 miles wide. Hence, engineers had to contend with Earthquakes, cyclones, an unstable seabed and even sabotage attempts from protestors.

Don Mueang International Airport (Bangkok, Thailand). A mid-sized airport, Don Mueang has an unusual feature smack-dab in the middle of its two runways: An 18-hole golf course. Hence, the only two taxiways are located at the end of the runways.

Hong Kong International Airport (Chek Lap Kok, Hong Kong). Besides the fact that the airport was built on two islands that were combined together, Hong Kong International Airport has a luxury golf course and a massive expo center within walking distance of its runway. The airport is also one of the busiest cargo hubs in the world.

Macau International Airport (Macau). With no space for large aircraft, the Macau International Airport was opened in 1995 on a strip of reclaimed land that is just large enough for 747s to land safely on. A set of highways then links the runway with the small island of Taipa where there is an air traffic control tower and a terminal.

Qamdo Bangda Airport (Qamdo, Tibet). At more than 14,000 feet above sea level, Qamdo Bangda is the world’s highest airport. Moreover, the airport boasts a nearly 3.5-mile-long runway.

So the next time you are passing through any of these airports, just remember that they rank among the world’s strangest.

Four important and simple travel tips to remember when traveling

The PlaneCrazy blog has recently posted a short entry that listed 4 important and simple travel tips to remember. These tips included:

1. Make photocopies of your passport details, insurance policy, any travelers cheques, visas and credit cards and always carry one copy someplace different from the originals plus leave a copy of everything with someone at home.

2. Pack smart while keeping airport security in mind as all of your baggage will be screened and possibly even hand-searched. In addition, remember to pack your medicine, jewelry and any valuables in your carry-on baggage.

3. ID your baggage and place identification tags on both the inside and outside of your baggage. In addition, don’t forget to label your laptop computer as well because laptops are usually the number one item that gets forgotten at security screening checkpoints.

4. Share your travel plans by registering with your respective embassy and by telling your family or friends what your travel plans are. However, remember to also tell them what constitutes an emergency at your end or their end. In other words, if its something that you or they can handle handle themselves from 3,000 kilometers away, its probably not an emergency.

Keeping the above tips in mind will increase the odds of your next vacation or business trip going more smoothly.

More tips on how to pack a carry-on bag

With security increasingly tight at airports leading to delays and airlines charging more and more fees on checked-in baggage, knowing how to pack everything into a carry-on is increasingly important. Hence, a recent Forbes.com article about packing for portability is well worth reading.

According to Forbes.com, there is another reason to pack for portability: Theft or lost checked-in bags. The article noted a 2008 report from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) which revealed that over a three-year period, an estimated 42,000 travelers in the USA alone have reported missing items from their luggage with a total estimated value of more than US$31 million. Missing items would include things such as clothing, jewelry, laptops and medicines and the article even quoted Doug Dyment, the creator of OneBag, a travel blog that offers advice on how to pack, as saying: "There are only two types of luggage: Carry-on luggage and lost luggage!”

Hence, here are five essential packing tips to remember before your next business trip:

  • Have a packing list and consider it to be a “contract with yourself” to NOT put items into your suitcase that is not on it.
  • Never travel with a suitcase that can’t also be carried instead of wheeled.
  • Carrying a garment fresh from the cleaners that is still on the hanger is ok as usually it won’t be counted as an additional piece of luggage. In fact, the flight attendants will likely hang it up in front of the cabin.
  • Women need to be aware of the weight of all of their products – especially cosmetics. Moreover, they should be aware of the amount of water in their products both for weight and security concerns
  • Look for solid versions of liquid products. For example: Powdered toothpaste weights less than tooth paste that comes in a tube and there is less risk of it ruining your clothes should it explode or leak.

At the end of the article, Dyment noted that organization is the key as there is no secret to traveling light because all that is in your suitcase is a very large number of very small things – an excellent point worth remembering.

Japanese business etiquette video: Exchanging meishi kokan or business cards

If you are planning a business trip to Japan, this short video from JapanTravelTV about giving and receiving business cards or meishi kokan in Japan is well worth watching. As the narrator explains, there are some subtle manners and etiquette to follow.

The video begins by showing the proper angle of bowing and the proper angle of the feet while doing so. The narrator then describes the proper procedure for exchanging business cards. This includes holding the corners of the business card and not covering up the company name or logo as this is considered bad manners. When giving the business card, hold the corner of it and when receiving one, be sure to hold it in both hands over your business cards or meishi kokan case and display respect by carefully reading over it rather than quickly putting it away.

Keeping these tips in mind will greatly aide you in making a good first impression on your next business trip to Japan or when dealing with your Japanese business counterparts.

The best iPhone travel applications

If you are a road warrior with an iPhone, Forbes.com has recently posted a great article listing several must-have iPhone travel applications that are less known than some of the more popular apps such as FlightTrack (which will tell you if your plane is running late), Next Flight (which tracks upcoming flight departures) and Currency (which provides updated exchange rate information). These lesser known iPhone travel apps include the following:

  • Yelp's "Monocle": If you have a iPhone 3G S with the latest version of Yelp's iPhone App, just shake it three times to activate a feature called "Monocle." Then point the screen in any direction to see information about what you are looking at that is superimposed over a real world image. Cost of the application: Free.
  • Email 'n Walk: This application uses the iPhone's internal camera to project a video behind an email you are working on. In other words, you can multitask. Cost of the application: US$0.99.
  • I'm In Town: If you are about to arrive or are already in your travel destination, this application will search through your contacts who are in your vicinity and alert them via email that you are in town and how they can get in touch with you. Cost of the application: US$0.99.
  • Shoot It! This application allows you to send personalized post cards straight from your iPhone or Blackberry to your friends or family with just one click. Cost of the application: US$0.99 for the application and US$0.99 to send a postcard in the US or up to US$1.50 if outside the US.

In addition, Forbes.com has also posted a video about the best iPhone apps that is also well worth watching even if you are not a technology geek.

How to avoid illness while traveling

A hectic travel schedule can easily wear down even the most fit business traveler’s immune system. Not to mention the fact that flu season is in full swing right now in Northern latitudes. Hence, a recent Wall Street Journal interview with Dr. Phyllis Kozarsky, a travel-health expert for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and a professor of medicine at Emory University, is well worth reading. Some of the tips or advice she mentioned during the interview included:

  • It's never too late be be vaccinated for something like Hepatitis A.
  • Have a good idea of what your travel schedule will be like for the next six months to a year and get vaccinated and buy medicines accordingly.
  • If possible, go in a day early to get used to the time zone and spend as much time as you can outdoors to adjust your biological clock.
  • Make a little travel health kit with everything that you might need in the event of a minor illness.
  • Be sure to have loperamide (Imodium) and an antibiotic – especially if you are traveling to a developing country.
  • Wash your hands more than you usually do and carry an alcohol-based sanitizer or hand gel.

Keeping the above tips in mind will keep you healthy both before and during your next hectic business trip.

Price comparison: Monthly car park parking fees

Manhattancarpark Parking a car in a big city can be ridiculously expensive. In fact and in the worst case scenario, you could spend more on parking fees than you do on gas, maintenance and car payments combined.

The survey found that monthly car park fees were highest in Rome. In fact, it costs almost US$400 more to park your car in Rome than it does in notoriously car unfriendly London. The world's worst airports for delays

If you are a frequent traveler in Asia, a recent Forbes.com article about the world’s most delayed airports has both good news and bad news for you. First, the good news: Some of the world's least delayed airports are in Asia. These include airports in Japan and South Korea. In fact, it was noted that flights at Osaka's Itami Airport were 94% on time in 2009 while flights arriving at Seoul's Gimpo International Airport were 91% on time and those departing were 93% on time.

Now the bad news: Many of the world's most delayed airports are in China and India. These include the following airports:

Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL):

  • Worst-arrival rank: 1
  • On-time arrivals: 44.5%

Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (BOM):

  • Worst-arrival rank: 2
  • On-time arrivals: 55.9%

Chennai International Airport (MAA):

  • Worst-arrival rank: 4
  • On-time arrivals: 63.9%

Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK):

  • Worst-departure rank: 1
  • On-time departures: 38.3%

Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL)

  • Worst-departure rank: 10
  • On-time departures: 62.4%

Hence and if you are traveling to some of the above airports, you should probably anticipate the possibility of having a delay either when arriving or departing.

Chinese business etiquette video: Giving and receiving business cards

If you are planning a business trip to China, this short video about giving and receiving business cards in China featuring Mark Kemsley, who has worked as a business consultant in China for 20 years and speaks both Cantonese and Mandarin, is well worth watching. As Mark explains, not having a business card is the equivalent of not having a name as the Chinese place great importance on both greetings and titles. In fact, the Chinese prefer to deal with someone who is of equal importance to them and preferably has a high sounding title – hence, the importance of having a business card that clearly shows your rank.

In addition and when giving a business card, Mark explains that you should always be standing and use both hands while if you accept a business card with only one hand, it is considered extremely disrespectful. Moreover, it's very important that you don't just ignore the business card and stick it in your pocket. Instead, carefully read over it for about three or four seconds before putting it in your pocket.

Tips for packing a 22-inch carry-on bag

If you are a road warrior who travels regularly, especially across borders, you probably have gotten accustomed to not checking in luggage. After all, with increased airport security, longer waiting times along with higher fees for checked in bags have made carry-on luggage essential for saving time. However, packing everything you need into a 22-inch suitcase for meetings, formal and informal dinners or gatherings plus the gym can be downright tricky.

Hence, a recent Wall Street Journal interview with handbag designer and road warrior Devi Kroell is well worth reading as she offer tips for other road warriors about how to keep their wardrobe both versatile and “fresh” while living out of that 22-inch suitcase. Her tips included:

  • Take items that are multifunctional.
  • Pack knits because these can be easily crinkled and uncrinkled.
  • Tissue paper in between each garment will make them less likely to wrinkle.
  • Keep your toiletries in a little zippered pouch that’s waterproof in case something leaks or explodes.
  • If you are a man, pack socks in different colors as it will get you noticed more!

Keeping the above tips in mind will save you both time and potential grief on your next hectic business trip.
